The Minimal Role of Predication on Taqīyyah in the Differences of Narrations

Abstract

Due to various social, political, and other contextual factors, the Holy Imāms (‘a) sometimes refrained from openly expressing the true rulings and instead resorted to taqīyyah (prudential concealment) when conveying religious rulings. To describe this phenomenon, jurists have employed the term “predication on prudential concealment” (maḥmūl ʻalā al-taqīyyah). Two primary approaches—maximal and minimal—have emerged regarding the role of taqīyyah in the differences found in aḥādīth (narrations). Proponents of the maximal approach argue that taqīyyah is the primary cause of variation in narrations and consider its influence to outweigh other factors. In contrast, the minimal approach, supported by scholars such as Shaykh al-Mufīd, Sāḥib al-Jawāhir, Shaykh al-Anṣārī, and contemporary jurists like Āyatollāh Sayyid ʻAlī al-Sīstānī, assigns taqīyyah a much less significant role, treating it as just one among several reasons for differences in narrations.
 
This study, by analyzing the views of Āyatollāh Sayyid ʻAlī al-Sīstānī and providing relevant evidence and arguments, challenges the significant influence of taqīyyah on ḥādīth differences. Additionally, it discusses the refinement of ḥādīth collections by filtering out taqīyyah-based narrations, demonstrating that the presence of such narrations in these collections is minimal.

لجأ الأئمة المعصومون (علیهم السلام) بناءً على الظروف الاجتماعیة والسیاسیة والأسباب المتعددة الأخرى، إلى عدم بیان الحکم الواقعی، واستخدموا التقیة فی بیان الأحکام. ولقد استخدم الفقهاء تعبیرات مثل "محمول على التقیة" للإشارة إلى هذا النهج.
تبلورت رؤیتان متعارضتان حول استخدام الحمل على التقیة وأثره فی اختلاف الأحادیث. فالنهج الأقصى یعتبر الکلام بناءً على التقیة السبب الأبرز فی اختلاف الأحادیث، وتؤکد على أهمیة دور التقیة أکثر من الأسباب الأخرى. وعلى النقیض من ذلک، فإن النهج الأدنى وعلماء کأمثال الشیخ المفید وصاحب الجواهر والشیخ الأنصاری، وصولاً إلى آیة الله السید علی السیستانی فی عصرنا، لا یرون للتقیة دوراً کبیراً فی نشوء اختلاف الأحادیث، بل یعتبرونها سبباً عادیاً کغیرها من الأسباب التی تؤدی إلى الاختلاف فی الأحادیث.
"نفى هذا البحث، بتبیینه مبانی آیة الله السیستانی وبناء على مجموعة من الأدلة والبراهین، التأثیر البارز للتقیة فی اختلاف الأحادیث. کما بین البحث، من خلال توضیح عملیة تنقیة المجامع الحدیثیة من الأحادیث المرویة عن طریق التقیة، أن وجود مثل هذه الأحادیث فی المجامع الحدیثیة محدود جداً."
