The authority of an epistemological source in jurisprudence means a kind of main influence of that source in jurisprudential inference. The derivation of the Shariah ruling has several sources of knowledge, that is, the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the intellect; In addition to having a scientific authority in jurisprudence, does the Qur'an also have authority over the source of Sunnah? The subject of this article is to examine the authority of the Qur'an over the Sunnah in jurisprudential inference.
The premise of the discussion is that the Qur'an is not the exclusive authority in inference and the Sunnah is also authoritative in jurisprudential inference. Both Quran and Sunnah are independent in conveying their meaning.
The authority of the Qur'an over the Sunnah in jurisprudential inference is based on the three-stage process of adhering to the hadiths, namely: validity, implication, and direction of issuance. According to the data of this article, which was done in an analytical way, the Qur'an has authority over the Sunnah in the validity of the Sunnah, which can be called absolute authority; Each of the Qur'an and the Sunnah implies a kind of authority over the other, which can be called relative authority; Each of the Qur'an and the Sunnah can be a reference in determining the direction of issuance of the other, but the secondary nature of this reference cannot be called authority.
